Toolmakers, masters and servants.
3 Minutes to reflect
In an archival interview, a young Steve Jobs is seen with an old computer displaying a green screen behind him, emphasizing the significance of tools for humanity.
He shares the story of a study that measured the energy consumption required by various animals to travel from point A to point B. Surprisingly, humans ranked merely in the middle, not excelling in these measurements.
However, the turning point in the study came when researchers observed a man riding a bicycle. Equipped with his tool, the man surpassed all other animals by a considerable margin, traveling much farther while expending the same amount of energy.
With a piercing gaze at the camera, Jobs articulates, “This is precisely what we aim to achieve with Apple – we are toolmakers. Our mission is to produce tools that unleash human creativity and potential, propelling us to new heights.”
Throughout history, the partnership between humans and their tools has been symbiotic. Whether it be the discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel, the advent of the printing press, or the creation of the combustion engine, these are all tools crafted by humans that have served as catalysts for progress, making their masters stronger and driving them to evolve.
2 Resources to pro level
Behind one of the most infamous betrayals in history lies a blade – the very dagger used by Brutus to assassinate his adoptive father, Emperor Caesar.
Yet, a blade also symbolises the indispensable tool skillfully wielded by surgeons worldwide, saving countless lives with its precision and expertise.
It is remarkable how the same tool, a blade, can take on divergent functions depending on the intention of its master.
Traditionally, humans have been seen as masters while tools serve as loyal, soulless servants – a relationship that has prevailed throughout humanity’s existence.
However, this status quo might soon witness a profound transformation. For the first time in history, humans are creating tools capable of self-improvement and evolution, independently determining their own utilization. The impact of such tools on humanity’s well-being might no longer be within our control.
In this video, the great thinker Yuval Noah Harari raises the critical question of what will unfold when we produce tools surpassing human intelligence.
For an engaging summer read, consider “Homo Deus”. This groundbreaking book, published in 2015 remarkably predicted the near future.
