3 Minutes to reflect
In his book "Eleven Rings," Phil Jackson, the former coach of the superstar Chicago Bulls and Lakers teams, poses a thought-provoking question: "Is basketball a trivial game or a magical experience?" He wonders, "What's so special about ten guys in tight shorts chasing a ball and throwing it into a basket?"
Every human endeavor can either be trivialized or regarded with deep respect. For instance, in the business world, is a startup a magical endeavor or merely a trivial scheme to make money? Both views are probably right, and the choice is ultimately yours.
Jackson suggests that his most significant daily task as a coach was to convince his players to see the magic in basketball. This same magic is necessary to persuade customers to believe in the product, motivate employees to work towards a common goal, and attract investors to provide funding. But what exactly is this magic?
The best description of magic comes from an unlikely source - a self-help book. In "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz, he says: "Your word is magic. White magic is your word used to build".
In "Homo Sapiens", Yuval Noah Harari explains how humans have used words to create magical stories of shared dreams and visions. The ability to tell stories has allowed us to collaborate and ultimately shape our future.
Word → Vision → Reality = Pure magic
The CTO uses code, the CEO uses words, and marketing uses emotions. Together, they create something that didn't exist before - something useful, beautiful, and ultimately, pure magic.
