3 minutes to reflect
My cousin went to school with Ben. Ben left investment banking to found a cat food startup. I invested. They just announced their Series B round, and I sold my shares with a fat multiple. Skilled? No, lucky.
Where does skill end and luck begin?
My wife thinks I'm the most lucky bastard alive, and she's probably right. Take my stag party in Vegas (it doesn't get luckier). My "friends" abandoned me in the middle of nowhere—no money, phone nor credit card, head covered. Just an address in my hands when I was uncovered and unleashed in some random part of town.
Fast forward two minutes: I'm walking down the street and find a strip of cash someone dropped. With those dollars—almost a thousand—I took a taxi to the destination, a bar. I bought drinks for 20 people before my friends even arrived.
Lucky then? Perhaps.
But I'm convinced that luck is one of those self-fulfilling skills. You have it because you think you have it. You think you have it because when something unfavorable happens, you let it slide right off your skin.
You're lucky because you perhaps take a moment to reflect on your day and ask yourself what you're grateful for. The things you're grateful for make you realize how fortunate you are, and there it is—the luck you were seeking was already there.
