My 3 new year resolutions (2 of 3)
#156 - Reflections on investing and life from building my holding company
Dear reader,
New year resolution number 2: Get alcohol out of the way of my goals
Why
In my teenage years, alcohol was a gift. Social lubricant for an insecure, awkward teenager who reached for it freely. Growing up, it became a liability. I consumed too much. A couple of ventures could have gone much better if I’d been more disciplined.
Now, at 43, I’m in good physical shape. Training well, consistently. Big professional goals ahead—I don’t want alcohol in the way.
How to make it stick
I’ve already started. My liver has been on holiday since this summer. After a first half of 2025 swimming in Negronis, I took the summer break to reset. Autumn came and I kept not drinking—except for a pleasant trip to Alba during truffle season.
I’m saying goodbye to alcohol the way you say goodbye to an old friend who helped you once but doesn’t fit your life anymore. Sporadically, in a civilized manner—that’s fine.
By myself, I don’t drink. Easy. With my wife, she knows my resolutions and that I take them seriously. She’s accepted she married a weirdo who watches her drink alone. Still, an occasion to celebrate or a meal that deserves a glass of wine—not half a bottle—I let it happen.
Social occasions are the tricky part. People expect you to drink. They push. But here’s my secret: I don’t need social lubricant anymore. I’m not that awkward teenager. There’s no hack. No routine. Just identity. I want to train strong. I want to win big. I’m a confident independent thinker.
You push me to drink? I said no
Back next week with the final resolution, it will be business related somehow.
