Rethinking my hyper-opportunistic approach to angel investing
#59 Angelinvesting.it - From idea to Series A - Weekly Newsletter
Dear reader,
After today, when you drink pasteurized milk, you might think of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), the renowned French microbiologist and chemist known for his groundbreaking contributions to science, including the process of pasteurization.
One of the most famous quotes attributed to him is: “Chance favors only the prepared mind.” This phrase has been embraced by the renowned European venture capital firm, Accel.
The "Prepared Mind" approach at Accel is a cornerstone of their investment strategy. Co-founded by Arthur Patterson and Jim Swartz, this method underscores a thesis-based approach. The strategy involves proactive research, engaging with networks, and identifying trends to invest in new opportunities with conviction.
Up to now, my approach to angel investing has been more reactive than proactive. Founders appeared on my LinkedIn and in my inbox, referred by friends and various connections. Some of these referrers, especially founders and VC associates, have originated a significant number of the deals in which I have invested.
Last week's newsletter prompted me to consider a shift in approach. In the email, I described a potential future and some first and second-order effects of the development of AI.
This exercise in envisioning a potential future I consider likely made me wonder if it's time for me to move away from an overly opportunistic approach to one that is more thesis-based.
An approach where, if I truly believe in the combination of entertainment, robotics, and biology with AI, I should focus my energies on scouting ventures in these three, or one of these, verticals.
I must admit that, in my mind, both approaches have their merits. In particular, the opportunistic, serendipity-fueled approach I have held until now feels very authentic to my life path.
My mind is definitely not set on this matter; expect to hear more from me about this potential shift in approach. If you have a strong opinion on the subject, I would love to hear your perspective. Please share your thoughts in the comments or reach out via email.
Have a great weekend,
Simone
