3 Paragraphs to think
Plato had a theory: the soul has three parts—Reason, Spirit, and Appetite. He imagined them as a charioteer (Reason) trying to control two horses: one noble (Spirit), one wild (Appetite). It’s a metaphor for inner conflict—but also a map for drive.
In entrepreneurship, it’s rarely Reason that wins. Founders take bets that defy logic. They quit stable jobs, chase improbable visions, and risk everything. What fuels them isn’t calm calculation—it’s raw conviction and insatiable desire. Spirit wants to change the world. Appetite wants to conquer it.
Intellect rarely builds greatness. Plenty of smart people accomplish very little. As an investor, I’d rather back average charioteers with two extraordinary horses—relentless appetite and unstoppable vision. Reason may steer, but it’s never the engine.
